Metformin HCl – What Exactly is Metformin HCl?


Metformin hcl is an abbreviation for Metformin Hydrochloride.

Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid is hydrogen chloride (HCl) mixed with water. Is a highly corrosive, strong mineral acid with many industrial uses. It is found naturally in gastric acid. In the old days, it was  called muriatic acid or spirits of salt. Then, hydrochloric acid was produced from vitriol (sulfuric acid) and common salt. It first appeared during the Renaissance, and then it was used by chemists like Glauber, Priestley and Davy in their scientific research.

Large-scale production started during the Industrial Revolution. Hydrochloric acid is being used in the chemical industry as a  reagent in major scale production of plastic bases, for example vinyl chloride for PVC and MDI/TDI which is used for polyurethane. It is also used on a much smaller scale in  household cleaning and descaling,, production of gelatin and other food additives,  and to process leather. Anual production is about 20 million tonnes.
